Homes and Living in New Paltz
Known for its spectacular views of the Shawangunk Ridge and plethora of outdoor opportunities, New Paltz is a scenic outdoor oasis less than 90 minutes from New York City. Founded in the mid-1600s, history enthusiasts can enjoy the lovely Huguenot Street where the early French settlers built their stone homes.
Artsy and vibrant, New Paltz is home to the State University of New Paltz at New York, which contributes to the creative, youthful vibe that the town exudes. Downtown New Paltz is home to Water Street Market, a local shopping mecca filled with quaint shops offering handmade artisanal items and artwork. On any given weekend, downtown New Paltz plays host to live music, farmer’s markets, street fairs, festivals and more.
A short drive from downtown is the stunning Shawangunk Ridge, home to world-renowned rock climbing, hiking and biking opportunities. Together, the open-to-the-public Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Preserve offer homeowners and residents thousands of acres of year-round recreational opportunities and stunning views of the Catskill Mountains.
The yearly Ulster County Fair, multiple public playgrounds and excellent school district make New Paltz just as family friendly as it is exciting and dynamic. The annual regatta challenges teams to build custom rafts and race down the Wallkill River, and is preceded by a town parade and rubber ducky race.
Local craft beer is brewed at the Gilded Otter, a small brewpub located at the edge of town just off the Wallkill River and nearby Huguenot Street. In addition to multiple award-winning vineyards and the dozens of local specialty restaurants, New Paltz is filled with culinary excellence at every turn.
Mere miles to the east sits the Hudson River and Walkway Over The Hudson State Park, one of the world’s longest pedestrian bridges, spanning over one mile between Highland and Poughkeepsie. New Paltz also affords easy access to a handful of excellent nearby downhill ski resorts - Windham, Belleayre, Hunter, Plattekill and more.
