Kerhonkson Shawangunk Living

Just over the mountain from New Paltz and down the road from Accord, Kerhonkson is another classic Ulster County mountain town. Adjacent to the Rondout Creek, residents and visitors are privileged in the breadth of outdoor activities and opportunities they can enjoy here.

Minnewaska State Park and Mohonk Preserve and just a short distance away via Route 44/55. Once there, travelers can partake in the activity of their choice. With hundreds of miles of carriage trails and fire roads, hiking and biking are common activities. Lake Minnewaska and Lake Awosting both offer swimming opportunities to cool off on hot summer days, including extended distance swimming through the Minnewaska Distance Swimmers Association.

Those who prefer to travel vertically rather than horizontally, are presented with some of the best rock climbing in the world due to the exceptionally hard rock that composes most of the ridge’s escarpment. Climbers from around the world migrate to the vertical faces of the Shawangunk Ridge and its hundreds of climbing routes dating back to the early 20th century.

A brief drive presents locals with Lippman Park and Lundy State Forest. Combined, the two offer dozens of forested miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. A short distance to the east sits the Rondout Reservoir, teeming with local wildlife (including bald eagles). The Reservoir is open to fisherman (with appropriate permits, of course) and the roads around the reservoir are ideal for cyclists, or for the casual Sunday drive.
