Rustic High Falls, NY
High Falls may be a small village but it is a big-hearted place. For such a little hamlet, it has a lot to offer, including some of the best farm-to-table dining in Ulster County, boasting the likes of the Depuy Canal House, a small restaurant dating back to the late 1700s and originally catering to hungry canal workers.
Centrally located, High Falls’ proximity to Stone Ridge, Rosendale and New Paltz is also a big plus. Second home buyers love that it's under two hours from Manhattan and its nearness to the Clove Valley, which is also virtually next door to Minnewaska State Park and the fabulous Mohonk Mountain House.
Bordered by water on the north and west sides, High Falls is known & recognized for its abundance of access to the Rondout Creek. Popular amongst canoers, kayakers and swimmers, the Rondout flows south from the Catskill Mountains into the Rondout Reservoir, used to supply crystal clear water to New York City and home to dozens of species of wildlife including eagles, herons, deer, trout and bear.
High Falls also has a history in the entertainment business. 1920s and 1930s torch singer Helen Morgan, who made hits including My Bill and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man, hails from High Falls. Perhaps more commonly known, the 1961 film Splendor in the Grass starring Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty, was partially shot in High Falls.
